Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary monastery, Arbanassi
The village of Arbanassi is located 4 km northeast from Veliko Tarnovo. It has a special place in the history of Bulgarian culture. In 2000 the Arbanassi old settlement is declared a historical settlement with national significance.
The Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary monastery, also known as The Monastery with the Miraculous Icon "Virgin Mary Troeruchitsa", is located in the southwestern part of the village. The monastery church resembles the other churches in Arbanassi and consists of a shrine, a vestibule, a chapel, and a narthex. It was most probably built in the very beginning of the 17th century. The decoration of the shrine and the vestibule dates back to the same period. The exact year is established from the inscription in the shrine. The St. Trinity chapel to the church was decorated in 1704 by daskal Kosta, Tsenyo, and Georgi. The monastery was last renovated in the period 1864-1868.
The church building has been completely renewed – strengthening of the vault with metal tension bars, isolation of the building’s foundation with lead sheets, drainage, and replacement of the roof.
Restoration works were performed in the vestibule and on of part of murals in the shrine.
