The St. George church in the village of Golyamo Belovo is a culture heritage property of national significance. According to the founder’s inscription, it was built between 1806 and 1813. The temple is a basilica with a gallery on the west side.
The first decoration of the church was made by Petar Kostov Valyov in 1852. The second decoration dates back to 1921. The iconostasis was made in 1806-1808. It is an exceptional chef d’ouevre – polychromed, carved, gilded, without analogue in Bulgarian cultural heritage. The ceilings are lavishly coloured. The furniture is also polychromated, with fine carving/. The images on the pillar capitals are an iconographic rarity, depicting the so-called “monsters” – temple keepers.
Murals from the first period could be seen on the eastern wall, in the altar, on the boarding sheet of the emporia and on the southern wall – the founder’s inscription. The pillar in the central nave date back to the first decoration.
Since 1992, with several interruptions, conservation activities have been performed. The iconostasis, polychromated ceilings, part of the altar, the southern and northern walls in the upper register of the central nave, as well as the southern nave with pillars.
