The building at 1 Parizh Str., in the city of Sofia was built in 1921 as the house and reception building of Kiro Stefanov – a major factory owner from Sliven and brother of the Minister of Finance in those times.
The project author was Architect Nikola Lazarov, one of the greatest students of the French architectural school. Architect Lazarov was a phenomenon within the development of the Bulgarian architecture. The fact that most of his buildings have been recognised as cultural monuments is a sound proof of the quality of his work.
The house was requisitioned by the State in 1947 and has since served as an administrative building.
It is a three-storey building with a penthouse floor. The eclectic – a mixture of “neo-Renaissance and secession" – is visible in the facades. Its plastic ornamentation is very rich. The primary ledge is covered with laurel leaves, and the entrance is beautifully arranged with an elegant marquise. A particularly interesting piece of the interior is the decoration of stucco plaster and woodcarving, which are different in each room. There are also preserved marble fireplaces, crystal mirrors and others. The antechamber has the most detailed ornamentation.
In 2011-2012 – the carvings on the facades and the entire lower, official, floor of the house were restored by company specialists. The original wall decoration of the antechamber was revealed beneath eight layers of paint. It was restored back to its original condition.
