Ancient fortress Sostra
The remnants of the Roman castle Sostra are near the village of Lomets, Troyan municipality. The fortress was built in the beginning of the II century. It was the residence of the second Matiak cohort. After the Goths invasion in 249, the Emperor Gallienus sent there the Second cohort to built a new fortified wall (10 m tall), which could be seen today – the eastern fortress wall.
We have restored the door of the eastern fortress wall and more precisely – the passage with the block construction of the so-called cataract – a falling door and adjacent rectangular towers. The castle is a cultural heritage asset of national importance.
