Ancient villa Armira - Ivaylovgrad
The ancient villa is discovered in 1964 during the construction of the dam on Armira river, west to Ivaylovgrad.
It is a magnificent complex of residence and production facilities, located on an area of 2200 square metres, with a peristyle yard and underfloor heating (hypocaust). This is the most lavishly decorated private home (palace). Well preserved mosaics with figural and geometric motives, pilasters, finely carved parapets, herms, profiled fragments of pillars, pilasters, copings and plastic marble linings have been discovered. With this regard, the ancient villa is one of the most lavish buildings on the territory of former Roman Thrace (I-V century).
Since 1974, the site is under restoration with some interruptions. In 2008, we participated in the PHARE CBC Bulgaria-Greece funded important restoration project. We returned back all removed mosaic fragments, total area of 280 square metres and performed an experimental area for exposure of mosaics.
The ancient villa is a cultural heritage asset of national importance.
